TIFT CO., GA (WALB)
A Tift County group is working to get homeless women off the streets and provide them with better opportunities.
Tift area House of Hope wants to establish a safe place for homeless women, with or without children.

The group's executive director Martine Hill told WALB News 10's Zach Logan that there are a number of homeless women in the area.

"There are women that will walk the streets. There's also [women] that are afraid to be on the streets and where they end up is in someone's car or on someone's porch," Hill said.

So, Hill and her team want to make a difference through the Tiftarea House of Hope. After all, Hill said that women just want to feel safe.

"Often times a woman will commit herself to a lot of things and make herself vulnerable to a lot of things in order to have a place to call home," Hill explained.

But the House of Hope is not just about providing a place for women to eat and sleep, they also want to supply women with self-sufficient skills.

"Our focus is to not put them back on the street during the day, but connect them with jobs if they're ready to work. If they need education, [then] connect them with the Christian Womens Job Corp or SRTC, wherever they need," Hill said.

Women can learn all types of skills from the Christian Womens Job Corp, like budget and financing and how to earn their GED.

Hill said she is looking at a location for the House of Hope and the group hopes to begin serving women by the beginning of 2017.

But before they open their doors, Tiftarea House of Hope needs to raise at least $20,000 for the program.

Those with the organization said they can reach their goal with the community's help. Buckets of Hope is happening now at the Tifton Mall.

Those visiting the mall can stop at the Buckets of Hope booth to purchase raffle tickets for $1 a piece. Then, they choose from over 20 buckets to drop their ticket. For example, those who want the chance to win a 32" flatscreen TV, would put their ticket in that bucket. Other items include a grill, a $200 VISA gift card, and more.

The drawings will take place on Monday, September 26th at 10:00 a.m. inside the mall.
Those who buy a ticket do not have to be present to win.
