Lowndes County Health Department –
206 S Patterson St, Valdosta, GA
(229) 333-5257
The Lowndes County Health Department is open Monday through Friday, with extended hours on Thursday

Childhood immunizations are one of the best-known services public health provides, there are more than 1,500 children (below the age of 21) who are clients of childhood programs, such as Children’s Medical Services, Babies Can’t Wait, Universal Newborn Hearing and Screening Intervention and Children First.

Telemedicine clinics allow children and their parent/guardian to stay in Valdosta to be seen by specialized physicians in Gainesville, Augusta and Macon.

Public health is the lead provider for telemedicine in South Georgia, said Dr. William Grow, district health director. Through this program children can be seen for issues by cardiologists, pulmonologists, neurologists and other specialists.

Almost 60,000 services were provided to more than 9,500 participants of the Women, Infant and Children program last year. WIC provides formula or nutritional supplements to children up to the age of 5 as well as pregnant mothers. Breast feeding is highly encouraged through this program, along with nutrition education.

We were extremely excited to open a WIC clinic on Moody Air Force Base last year, said Holly Rountree, nutrition services director. We were the first district to open on an Air Force base in Georgia. This partnership has proven to be very beneficial for the program.

Through the Women’s Health program, women received more than 50,000 services including family planning services, perinatal health, physicals and referrals and payment for mammograms.

We continue to support the Baby LUV program at Lowndes County Health Department, allowing the highest of the high-risk African-American women in our community to receive additional support throughout their pregnancy to help ensure a positive pregnancy outcome, said Grow.

Due to a large need in the Lowndes County community, a hypertension clinic was opened at the health department in 2015. The clinic focuses on clients who come through the health department with hypertension and have no other health-care provider.

Unfortunately, due to budget conditions we had to close the Stroke and Heart Attack Prevention Program years ago, said Grow. Since closing that program, there have been hundreds of people here in Valdosta that have needed medical attention but could not afford to go anywhere else. Now that we’ve been able to open through other avenues, we are trying our best to help these clients get their blood pressure back under control.

The emergency preparedness program continues to work on health department and personal preparedness should there be a natural or man-made disaster in the community. A summit was held for law-enforcement, health-care organizations, emergency management and other key players on the Strategic National Stockpile in Valdosta on March 29.

The Lowndes County Health Department is open Monday through Friday, with extended hours on Thursday to better serve the community. General clinic services (childhood and adult immunizations, tuberculosis skin tests, physicals, birth/death certificates and more) are provided as a walk-in service. Many programs such as WIC, Family Planning, Breast & Cervical Cancer and Hypertension Clinic require appointments.
